PULLED: A CATALOG OF SCREENPRINTING!

April 19th, 2011

So, the venerable Mike Perry asked me to include work in his new book, Pulled: A Catalog of Screenprinting. published by Princeton Architectural Press.

I owe the introduction to Dan Black at landland.net, my former roommate, who suggested my inclusion.  Dan. Can’t thank U enough.

Anyway, the book came out late last month.  I bought a copy yesterday and it is so well made, shot, and currated wisely.  I am humbled to be included in the same pages as Aesthetic apparatus, Landland, Seripop, Sonnenzimmer…and a bunch of others.

here’s the cover.

Hey All.

I made this poster, a 18” X 24” 4 color silk screen for a show i’m curating a lot of, called RADIANCE.

SO OVERDUE FOR AN UPDATE. INTO THE NEON

February 28th, 2011

Wow peoples.  I’m really i have let this thing go.  So much has happened. so many tears, and so many shamefull mornings waking up with cake in my mouth.

This will be the beginning of several posts to come updating you all on what i’ve been up to since…this last summer.  It will be out of order, it will get messy and greasy, but you will get updated.

o.k. first thing to come to mind.

Last summer my super great queer photog friend quito zeigler called me up to get breakfast.  Over coffee and amazing breakfast sandwiches at the collossal cafe, we dreamed up the idea of a queer art/performance road show.  In our riffing of ideas, Quito planted the idea of doing a preliminary queer art show in NYC, drawing from the excellent pool of artists that quito attended the International Center of Photography with…along other seminal queer artists and activists.  The germ was planted…and then many months later Into the Neon was born.

Now, because I am such a terrible blogger, I am telling you this after the show has closed… but for those (like me) who were unable to attend the show regardless, maybe I can compile, and connect you to what happened with the show.

there wuz photos, there wuz skulpture, there wuz performances, there wuz a big fruit tree.

and I made the poster, which is a photocollage of the window of a gaybar in milwaukee where jeffrey dahmer used to find some of his victims at, and an old lover’s hand w/ sharpie drawings on it.

12” X 20” 5 color silkscreen. $10 if u wanna one

here’s one of the prints I had in the show.  It’s sort of a prototype.  I’m going to work with this print a little more, but here’s version 1.

betweenfakeanddead

“between fake and dead (trixter)” 26” X 30” Screenprint on Foam

edition of 5.  If you want one, contact me.

This is the first of a series of portrait prints on foam.  The goal is to present several portraits of personas, people or characters who’s plastic play with identity acts as a way to order society.  This is a portrait of a trixter character whome appears during the Brazilian Carnival celebration.  Carnival is a celebration and farewell to bad things, but even during the uplift and celebretory atmosphere of carnival, the trixter’s mischeif making reminds parade goers of the death and troubles left behind, or will encounter in the near future.

The show, INTO THE NEON, was great from what I heard. Check the website to see the other amazing artists, and soon there will be photos from the show.

Some version of the same show will be held in Minneapolis in April.  More details about that to come.

PARADE SHOW RECAP

August 10th, 2010

If you haven’t already heard about it, let me tell you about the amazing parade and show I helped organize last friday August 6th.
My friend Jackie Beckey and I were asked to organize a “house show” for one of four events spurred on by Red76′s program “House show as School House” that took part during Red76′s residency at the Walker Art Center. Our mutual friend Gabriel Mindel (who’s in red76) asked various people within the music scene here in minneapolis to organize their version of an ideal house/warehouse show., Then, the next day, each organizer was asked to come down to the lawn of the Walker to talk about how DIY show spaces act as centers for artistic, cultural and political dialog. Dye A Log!

Jackie and I were really stoked to a: be asked, and b: to work together. Her band Brute Heart, and my band Gay Beast have played many a show together, but we’ve never really had the chance to collaborate. So, once we got to talking, Jackie mentioned that she had organized a marching band for the last May Day parade, and how she’d love to get the marching band involved in some sort of performance. Then I started gabbing about my interests in parades, and it just all ballooned from there. Parade, followed by killer warehouse show. We got ahold of this really great new venue in town called the 1419 space..and we got an amazing lineup. Gay Beast, Mother of Fire, Brute Heart, and two touring bands..No Babies, and Orange Coax.

The parade was just bonkers. Jackie organized the marching band, complete with costumes and glow sticks. There were stilt walkers, a banner of christmas lights ..powered by a generator on a bike..face paint..everything.

We had no permit for our shenanegans, so we crossed our fingers and hoped the popo wouldn’t have a problem. And it all worked, with no complications or drama.

Sufficed to say, it was a memorable time….and hopefully we can do it all again next year.

TOM OF FINLAND… WOW!!!!

August 10th, 2010

So this is WAY OH WAY so overdue. But on my band Gay Beast‘s last west coast tour, I had the opportunity to show some prints at the legendary Tom of Finland foundation. If you aren’t familiar with Tom’s work, it’s amazing. An integral part of both Gay art, and erotic art in general.
Anyway, so my friend Sean Carnage helped set up an amazing night at the foundation. I was able to show 10 prints of mine, create a print to give away to all the people who came to the show, and hang with both leather daddies and music nerds while eating amazing vegan food and jamming to crazy tunes. Quite the memorable night.

For the show, I made 3 small editions of prints as a response to Tom’s work. I tried to take some of the ideas and vitality of erotic art and put it within a more whimsical and/or abstract context.
Here are the 3 prints.

Sean, and his boyfriend Mikhai were the sweeetest organizers ever. and I had an unforgettable conversation with the TOF foundation president Durk.
before the show, Sean did an inteview with me… and it’s HERE.

and then, after the show, we had a crazy awesome show at the Pehr space with Raw War, Sister Fucker and XBXRX. Totally off the chain.

Prints are in the “Prints” section and are for sale if you like.

Art-A-Whirl Weekend!

Location: Casket Arts Carriage House, 1720 Madison St NE #203, Minneapolis
Hours: Fri 8-11pm, Sat noon-6pm, Sun noon-5pm

Opening Party 8-11pm Friday May 14th

This is not your grandmother’s wallpaper. Studio mates Nick Howard, Anna Tsantir and Vincent Murray invited 30 local artists to create prints, drawings and multimedia two dimensional works that will be combined to cover a 22’x10’ studio wall floor to ceiling. Each artist created at least five works no larger than 10”x15” that together will loosely mimic the repetition of a wallpaper pattern. So “flock” over to the Carriage House this art a whirl weekend, and see what they’ve come up with.
